Alaska Airlines has introduced electronic bag tags for general purchase, following a successful trial that began in December 2022. Priced at $89, the tags aim to streamline the baggage check-in process, allowing travelers to skip the need for traditional printed tags at the airport.
The tags, developed in partnership with Netherlands-based vendor Bagtag, connect with the Alaska Airlines mobile app. Passengers can activate the tag after checking in for their flight by tapping their smartphone to the tag. This transfers flight information to the device's screen, which displays the traveler's details.
Initially tested with 2,500 Mileage Plan members, the product has since been refined. Alaska Airlines has added improved on-screen instructions and a new strap for enhanced usability. The tags are functional for Alaska-branded flights within the U.S., Canada, and Belize, and can be used within 24 hours of a scheduled flight.
This innovation reflects Alaska Airlines' efforts to simplify travel and improve efficiency for its passengers.
