In a move that's stirring both anticipation and concern among its guests, Celebrity Cruises has announced a policy change that will see its adults-only Solarium venue open to guests under the age of 16 during specific hours on select itineraries. This decision, aimed at accommodating younger cruisers during colder weather conditions, marks a significant shift in the cruise line's approach to onboard amenities and guest experience.

The Solarium, a tranquil oasis known for its pool, hot tubs, and luxurious loungers, has traditionally been a space where adults could find respite from the bustling energy of family-friendly activities elsewhere on the ship. Enclosed under glass panels, the Solarium offers a serene environment for relaxation in all weather conditions, making it a favorite among adult travelers seeking a quiet escape.

According to an announcement distributed to travel agents on February 20, 2024, the new policy will introduce "Solarium Kid hours" from 5-7 p.m. daily on select sailings in Alaska, The Baltics, and Antarctica. This adjustment is designed to offer families the flexibility to enjoy the Solarium's facilities during times when outdoor pools may not be accessible due to weather or maintenance issues. However, the cruise line has clarified that this offering will not extend to warm-weather destinations such as the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

While the introduction of Solarium Kid hours is a pilot program, its reception could lead to further adjustments, including expanded hours or inclusion of additional destinations based on the specific conditions of each cruise. The policy's impact on the overall guest experience, particularly among those who value adults-only spaces, remains to be seen. Concerns have been raised about the potential difficulty in enforcing the new guidelines, especially regarding the exact times children are allowed in the space and how this might affect the Solarium's tranquil atmosphere.

Celebrity Cruises' decision to open the Solarium to younger guests, albeit in a limited capacity, reflects a broader trend in the cruise industry towards more inclusive and flexible guest policies. As the cruise line navigates the feedback from this initiative, it will be interesting to see how this balance between family-friendly inclusivity and adult-exclusive tranquility evolves.

This policy change is part of Celebrity Cruises' ongoing efforts to enhance the onboard experience for all guests, including the introduction of the Celebrity Xcel, the fifth ship in the innovative Edge class, set to join the fleet in November 2025. As the cruise industry continues to adapt to the diverse needs of its passengers, initiatives like the Solarium Kid hours may become more commonplace, offering a glimpse into the future of cruising that caters to every member of the family.
