Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is enhancing its facilities as part of a multi-billion dollar redevelopment project. The airport, which has often been criticized for its cramped terminals and inefficient security screening, is making significant strides to improve the passenger experience.
The first phase of this redevelopment was the opening of the new Terminal A facility earlier this year. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the airport, has now announced the opening of seven additional gates in Terminal A. This expansion will provide airlines with more operational space and offer travelers enhanced amenities.
JetBlue and United Airlines will operate flights from these new gates. The additional space is expected to help United stabilize its Newark operation, which has experienced numerous delays and cancellations due to summer thunderstorms and staffing shortages at the Federal Aviation Administration.
Along with the new gates, six more concessionaires have opened, including Jersey Mike's Subs, Law Coffee Company, Ink bookstore, Boardwalk, Hudson Nonstop, and New Jersey Monthly.
In the coming months, Delta Air Lines will relocate from the outdated Terminal B to the new Terminal A, and the last five gates in the new terminal will be opened for Delta's use. Additionally, two more lounges, an American Airlines Admirals Club and a Delta Sky Club, are set to open in Terminal A by the end of September.
Once Terminal A is fully operational, the focus will shift to other improvements at Newark, including a replacement for the outdated AirTrain system.
