Air travelers are set to break the record for the highest number of passengers passing through airports in a single day. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipates screening over 3 million people on June 28, marking the peak travel day for this year's Fourth of July holiday period.
This projection surpasses the previous record set on June 23, when the TSA screened 2.99 million travelers. The increase in air travel aligns with the American Automobile Association's (AAA) annual Fourth of July travel forecast, which predicts that 5.7 million people will fly to their holiday destinations, a 7% rise from 2023.
AAA also projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car during Independence Day week, representing a 4.8% increase from 2023 and nearly a 10% increase from the same period in 2019. In total, AAA expects 70.9 million people to travel at least 50 miles from home between June 29 and July 7.
One contributing factor to the rise in travel is lower fuel prices and slightly cheaper domestic airfares, which are about 2% lower according to AAA's booking data. Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, stated, "We are expecting the week to be the busiest ever."
The TSA plans to screen more than 32 million passengers from Thursday through Monday, July 8, which would mark a 5.4% increase over 2023. TSA Administrator David Pekoske commented, "We expect this summer to be our busiest ever, and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday. The traveling public is on the move, which is a sign of a healthy economy."
Both the TSA and AAA recommend that travelers arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled departure to accommodate the increased passenger volume.
