Italy - Hold onto your hats, culture lovers! This summer, the cities of Bergamo and Brescia are turning up the heat as they celebrate their status as the Italian Capital of Culture 2023. A whirlwind of concerts, festivals, exhibitions, and theatre awaits, promising to fill your Italian summer with life, music, and colour.
This extraordinary cultural gala, dubbed a "long summer of pop," will transform the two cities into stages showcasing hundreds of events.
International artists such as Kaarina Kaikkonen and Vero Cendoya will be gracing The Harlequin's Cloak - a theatre and participatory art festival in Bergamo's Teatro Tascabile, running until 30 September.
The Centro Teatrale Bresciano marks a milestone with "The invisible cities. The future is a duty" - a visionary show celebrating the centenary of Italo Calvino's birth, from 27 June to 9 July.
Meanwhile, summer tunes will echo throughout Bergamo and Brescia with the Festa della Music from 21 June and 24 June, respectively. The lineup includes crowd favorites like Madame, Snarky Puppy, and Jethro Tull in Bergamo and music sensations like Mr. Rain and Coma Cose in Brescia.
In Brescia's Festival Jazz on the Road (10-14 July), prepare to be enthralled by performances from artists like Jonathan Coel & Artchipel Orchestra and Bill Frisell's "Four." The Sub Limen festival starting on 21 July in both cities, offers a unique blend of electronic, pop, and experimental music.
Visual art enthusiasts will find plenty to marvel at with exhibitions in Bergamo's GAMeC, featuring renowned artists such as Rachel Whiteread and Argentinian artist Vivian Suter. Additionally, Accademia Carrara is unveiling "Peaks of light. Naoki Ishikawa on the Bergamesque Alps", a stunning display of nineteenth-century paintings and contemporary photographs.
Film buffs can also look forward to outdoor film festivals featuring a plethora of films by prominent directors and international productions. These include "L'Eden d'Estate" from 9 June to 8 September in Brescia's Santa Giulia Museum and "Esterno Notte" from 15 June to 6 September in Bergamo's Biblioteca Caversazzi.
