Summer travel season is set to take off, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) prepared to screen record numbers of passengers at airport security checkpoints nationwide. Starting Memorial Day weekend and continuing through Labor Day, the agency anticipates its busiest day to fall on Friday, May 26, with around 2.6 million passengers expected to pass through checkpoints.
And TSA isn't just ready - they're enhancing the travel experience! In a new perk for TSA PreCheck® members, teenagers aged 13-17 can now accompany TSA PreCheck enrolled parents or guardians through expedited screening when traveling on the same reservation, given that the TSA PreCheck indicator is visible on the teen's boarding pass. Younger kids, 12 and under, can continue to accompany enrolled parents or guardians through TSA PreCheck lanes without restrictions.
"This key action, supported by the President and Congress, enables us, for the first time in TSA's history, to pay our workforce using the same pay scale that applies to other federal employees. As expected, this has already improved our recruiting and retention rates," said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. "For passengers, this will mean better overall staffing for all of TSA's activities that support secure and efficient travel and an improved passenger experience."
TSA is also deploying advanced technology to streamline airport checkpoints and enhance security effectiveness, making your travel experience smoother and safer. Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) units will confirm the authenticity of a passenger's identification, along with flight details, and pre-screening status without needing a boarding pass. These units also capture a real-time photo of the traveler for immediate identity verification. An alternative identity verification process will be available for travelers who prefer not to use this facial matching process, an alternative identity verification process will be available without losing a place in line.
To improve the scanning and threat detection capabilities for carry-on bags, TSA is deploying new Computed Tomography (CT) units at checkpoints nationwide to improve the scanning and threat detection capabilities for carry-on bags. These CT units give TSA officers a 3D image of passengers' bags, reducing the need for physical bag checks.
The agency also shared seven simple tips to help passengers navigate the TSA security checkpoint quickly and efficiently:
- TSA PreCheck® members: Ensure your Known Traveler Number (KTN) is in your reservation.
- Pack an empty bag and know before you go: Check TSA's "What Can I Bring?" tool to understand what is prohibited.
- Give yourself plenty of time: Plan ahead and allow enough time for parking, shuttles, check-ins, and security checks.
- Be aware of new checkpoint technology: Follow guidance from TSA officers.
- Respect TSA and other frontline airport and airline employees: Unruly behavior can result in delays or penalties.
- Ensure you have an acceptable ID: Ensure your ID is REAL ID compliant if you plan to use it to fly within the U.S. after May 7, 2025.
- Contact TSA with questions, compliments, complaints, or assistance.
So, buckle up, jet-setters! This summer is gearing up to be an exciting time for travel. With these new TSA improvements and your savvy navigation of the security checkpoint, you're bound to start your summer adventure off on the right foot.
Safe travels and happy adventuring!
