Tragic Grizzly Bear Attack Claims Two Lives in Banff National Park

BANFF, Canada – A devastating incident unfolded in Canada's Banff National Park when a grizzly bear attacked and killed two backpackers. The tragic event took place on Friday evening around 8 pm in the Red Deer River Valley, a secluded section of the park characterized by trails but devoid of nearby roads.

Upon receiving a GPS alert indicating a bear attack, Banff wardens promptly responded. By the time the team arrived at the scene at approximately 1 am, they discovered the lifeless bodies of the two campers. In close proximity was an aggressive grizzly, which, given the circumstances, was subsequently shot by park officials for safety reasons. The specific area of the attack has since been closed to the public.

This period of the year witnesses grizzlies in a feeding frenzy as they endeavor to accumulate fat reserves for the impending winter. Concurrently, the Rockies experience a surge in hiking activities, attributed to the cooler temperatures and the mesmerizing golden hues of larch and aspen trees. This overlap has unfortunately led to several recent bear-related incidents in the Canadian Rockies. In 2022 alone, Canada recorded 26 bear attacks, four of which were fatal.

The captivating scenery and favorable weather conditions in Banff National Park during late September invariably attract numerous hikers. However, this also means venturing into territories frequented by bears, underscoring the importance of caution and awareness.
