United Airlines and Air Canada are leveraging Apple AirTags to streamline the recovery process for lost or delayed luggage, providing passengers with a new layer of reassurance during their travels. The initiative allows passengers to share real-time location data from their AirTags directly with the airlines, simplifying efforts to locate misplaced bags.
The feature, integrated into the airlines’ mobile apps, utilizes Apple’s “Share Item Location” function from the iOS 18.2 update. Travelers can now link their AirTag-enabled luggage to the app and submit a delayed baggage report, including a shared location link. Airline agents can then view an interactive map displaying the bag’s last known location to expedite its return.
Privacy is a key consideration of the service. The shared location link automatically expires after seven days or can be manually disabled by the user at any time, ensuring secure data management.
Apple has announced that over 15 airlines, including Delta Air Lines, British Airways, and Qantas, are set to adopt this feature in the near future. This technological integration marks a significant step forward in improving customer service and reducing the stress associated with lost luggage.
