CHICAGO, Sept. 13, 2024 – United Airlines has signed a groundbreaking agreement with SpaceX to provide Starlink’s high-speed Wi-Fi service across its fleet, marking the largest deal of its kind in the airline industry. The move will deliver free, fast, and reliable inflight internet to passengers on United's mainline and regional aircraft.
With this partnership, United will equip more than 1,000 planes with Starlink’s satellite-based internet, allowing passengers to enjoy the same high-speed, low-latency connection in the air that they use on the ground. Starting in early 2025, passengers will be able to access live TV, stream content, use social media, shop online, and even game from seatback screens or personal devices.
"Everything you can do on the ground, you'll soon be able to do onboard a United plane at 35,000 feet," said United CEO Scott Kirby.
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, provides global internet coverage, including remote areas previously unreachable by traditional signals. United will become the first major airline to offer this service at such a large scale. The new connectivity options will be available on all United flights over the next few years.
In addition to enhancing passenger experiences, United’s Starlink service will benefit employees by improving operational communication, especially during disruptions or when working in remote areas.
