For anyone seeking a true escape into nature, Kenai Fjords delivers in every way.

I'd always been fascinated by wildlife documentaries, especially those featuring whales. So when I heard about humpbacks in Alaska performing something called "bubble net feeding," I was intrigued. The idea of seeing these massive creatures work together to hunt in the wild was too good to pass up. That's what led me to book a trip to Kenai Fjords National Park.

I was looking for more than just whale watching, though. I wanted to experience the Alaskan wilderness I'd heard so much about – glaciers, fjords, and forests that seemed to go on forever. It felt like a chance to see a part of the world that was still wild and unpredictable.

As I packed my bags for Anchorage, I was excited but also a little nervous. Would the reality live up to what I'd imagined? Spoiler alert: it did, and then some. Here's how my Alaskan adventure unfolded.

Seward Highway
Getting There: The Journey Began

My adventure started with the journey to Seward, a charming seaside town that serves as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. After flying into Anchorage, I embarked on the scenic drive along the Seward Highway. The route offered spectacular views of the Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm, and as I wound my way south, I even Dall sheep grazing on the cliffs. After a two-and-a-half-hour drive, I arrived at the Windsong Lodge, where the rustic charm and modern comforts immediately made me feel at home.

The Windsong Lodge Experience

The Windsong Lodge, part of the Pursuit Collection, was more than just a place to rest; it was a retreat into the heart of Alaska's wilderness. My room was cozy, with plush bedding, warm wood accents, and large windows that framed the surrounding forest. After each day of exploration, I found myself unwinding in the lodge's spacious lounge, sipping on a locally brewed beer while recounting the day's adventures.

Dining at the lodge was an experience in itself. The Resurrection Roadhouse, the lodge's main restaurant, served up delicious meals featuring local ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the house-smoked salmon and the reindeer sausage—both local delicacies that added a true taste of Alaska to my culinary journey.

What I Packed: Preparing for Summer in Alaska

Summer in Alaska, I discovered, is a season of contrasts, where sunny days can quickly turn into cool, misty evenings. I packed with layers in mind. My essentials included a moisture-wicking base layer to keep dry during hikes and boat tours, an insulating layer like a fleece jacket for the chilly moments, and a waterproof outer shell for the occasional rain showers, especially when out on the water.

I also made sure to bring binoculars and my camera; the wildlife and landscapes were truly once-in-a-lifetime sights. Sturdy hiking boots, a hat, gloves, and sunglasses proved invaluable. And although Alaska's summer days are long, with up to 20 hours of daylight, I was glad to have packed a sleep mask, which helped me catch some restful sleep at the lodge.

Humpback Whale Breach Alaska
The Magic of Bubble Net Feeding

The highlight of my Kenai Fjords adventure was undoubtedly the chance to witness humpback whales engage in bubble net feeding, a cooperative hunting technique that is as fascinating as it is rare. Bubble net feeding is not a behavior seen in all humpback whale populations; it is a unique feeding strategy primarily observed in certain groups of whales in specific regions, including Southeast Alaska and the waters around the Kenai Fjords.

On my first day, I joined the Northwestern Fjords Tour, a day-long excursion that took me deep into the fjords. As the boat cut through the icy waters, I was surrounded by towering glaciers, dramatic cliffs, and lush forests. The anticipation grew as we entered the feeding grounds.

Bubble net feeding occurs during the summer months when the whales return to the nutrient-rich waters of Alaska to feed. This behavior is most commonly observed from June to September, coinciding with the peak of the whales' feeding season. The whales work together in a remarkable display of teamwork: as they dive beneath the surface, they release a curtain of bubbles that encircles a school of fish, forcing them into a tight ball. Then, with a precision honed over generations, the whales surge upward, mouths agape, swallowing thousands of fish in a single gulp.

These humpbacks are part of a close-knit familial group that has perfected this technique over time, making it a rare and extraordinary event to witness. Seeing these massive creatures breach the surface in unison was nothing short of awe-inspiring—a powerful reminder of the intelligence and coordination these gentle giants possess. The rarity of this behavior, combined with the majestic setting of Kenai Fjords, made the experience all the more special.

Kenai Fjords Glacier
An Evening on the Glacier Dinner Cruise

After a day of thrilling wildlife encounters, I opted for the Glacier Dinner Cruise, a more leisurely but equally captivating experience. Departing from Seward in the late afternoon, this cruise combined the best of Alaska's natural beauty with a gourmet dining experience. As we glided past shimmering glaciers and waterfalls cascading down rugged cliffs, I kept my eyes on the water—Dall's porpoises, sea lions, and even the occasional orca made appearances.

As the sun began to dip behind the mountains, casting a golden glow over the fjords, I was treated to a sumptuous dinner featuring fresh Alaskan seafood. There was something magical about enjoying a meal as glaciers and wildlife drifted by, the calm waters reflecting the sky's ever-changing colors.

Wildlife and Scenery: Beyond the Whales

While the humpback whales were the stars of the show, the Kenai Fjords were teeming with other wildlife that added to the richness of my experience. Puffins, with their colorful beaks and comical expressions, were a delight to watch as they dove for fish. Steller sea lions basked on rocky outcrops, their deep, guttural roars echoing across the water. And I was thrilled to spot a bald eagle soaring overhead, its keen eyes scanning the waters for a meal.

The landscapes were just as varied and dramatic as the wildlife. From the towering glaciers of Aialik Bay to the verdant forests clinging to the cliffs, the scenery was a constant reminder of the raw, untamed beauty that defines Alaska. Whether I was gazing up at the jagged peaks of the Kenai Mountains or watching a glacier calve into the sea with a thunderous roar, the sense of awe was ever-present.

Conclusion: An Unforgettable Alaskan Adventure

My stay at the Windsong Lodge in Seward, coupled with the unforgettable experiences of the Northwestern Fjords Tour and the Glacier Dinner Cruise, offered the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Whether I was marveling at the coordinated dance of bubble net feeding humpbacks, savoring a gourmet meal as glaciers floated by, or simply soaking in the serene beauty of the Alaskan wilderness, this journey will stay with me long after I've returned home. For anyone seeking a true escape into nature, Kenai Fjords delivers in every way.
