Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas faced turbulent conditions during the ship's transatlantic voyage from Rome to New York, as severe storms forced an abrupt course adjustment. The captain’s announcement warned passengers about potential rough weather and advised them to remain seated for safety during the maneuver.
High Winds and Rough Waves
The Quantum Ultra-class ship, weighing 167,704 gross tons, encountered waves crashing over Deck 3 windows and wind speeds of 50-55 knots (57-63 mph). Images and videos shared by guests revealed broken glassware, disarray in public spaces, and "angry seas." Despite the chaos, the ship’s safety was never at risk, and no injuries were reported, though seasickness was prevalent among passengers.
Shipboard Adjustments
Outdoor activities, including poolside events, were canceled due to the weather. However, the crew quickly organized additional indoor options, allowing guests to enjoy live music, casino games, and dining experiences. The ship's onboard features remained functional, offering passengers a chance to create memorable moments despite the storm.
Transatlantic Itinerary
Odyssey of the Seas departed Rome on November 3 for a 14-night repositioning cruise. The itinerary included stops in Spain—Barcelona, Valencia, Cartagena, and Malaga—and Funchal, Portugal, before crossing the Atlantic. The ship is set to arrive at Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, on November 17, where it will begin its winter season offering cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean.
Seasonal Weather Challenges
Late autumn crossings in the northern Atlantic are known for turbulent weather, influenced by lingering tropical systems and seasonal changes. Cruise lines like Royal Caribbean closely monitor weather patterns, providing updates and making adjustments as needed to ensure passenger safety.
Odyssey of the Seas continues on schedule, and her 4,198-passenger capacity is set to welcome guests for upcoming Caribbean itineraries before returning to Rome for the summer 2025 season.
